It all begun when we, my lovely girlfriend Debbie and I, had to move out of our rented flat and go somewhere else. We live in the north of spain, Cataluña, one of the nicest places on earth. There was a very inexpensive property available, just outside town but with a beautiful view over the mountains and the sea, just a 15 minute drive from the city center.

Mont Lloret total

It is very quiet at the end of the road without any traffic so it is perfect for our animals, 2 cats and 4 dogs, there is no risk of them getting run over on the street.

There was a slight catch of course....... the price was low, there was even a small week-end house already build BUT there was no water and no electricity.

You can not really live anywhere without water. So we inquired about a mains water supply or a well and had to pay 2000 Euros for the water. A lot of money but a one off, so we had water installed.

The next electricity pole is 90 meters away. So I thought it would be easy to have a hook up but the private company responsible for all connections within the settlement asks for 6000+ Euros!!! simply to throw a wire over the road! We decided that this was not correct and started looking for alternatives.

We now (one year later) live without an electricity connection, having never the less 220V in our plugs, running two computers on broadband, satellite tv, loads of outside and inside lights and "civilized" amenities like fridge-freezer, hairdryer and washing machine.

Hard to believe but the main power source are solar panels, it's the sun that powers all this. It is getting help by a small generator and we are thinking of a wind generator as well but the nicest thing are the solar collectors.

This website is to show how it was done, what it costs and what you have to change in your life to make it happen. I build the system from scratch with very limited financial recourses and I must say that until now I'm very pleased with the results. It is nice to see a heavy rainstorm coming down, wiping out the electricity around for miles but our light stays on!

Finally I like to acknowledge a website that got me into this in the first place. It is a bit older but got me some ideas in the beginning. So have a look at
